STDs AND YOU
A. STDs, also known as Sexually Transmitted Diseases, are transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, intravenous drug use, or nonsexual contact such as childbirth or breastfeeding. Having unprotected sex with someone infected with an STD will more than likely lead to an infection. Examples of STDs include gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, herpes, chlamydia, and hepatitis. If you believe you may be infected with an STD, you need to get tested immediately.
A. STDs are more common than most people believe. Some STDs do not show symptoms, so the only way to confirm that you are infected is to get tested. You can unknowingly be infected and transmit STDs to others. You are at risk if you have come in contact with an STD-infected person.
A. Yes. If you have engaged in unprotected oral, vaginal, or anal sex, getting tested for STDs is important. Although many STD infections do not show symptoms, it is still possible to spread them. Getting tested will put you at ease and help you begin any needed treatment
A. Private STD Check offers STD testing to minors as to allow them access to discreet, safe, and confidential STD testing with parental consent. While some states have a specific age of consent (which is usually between 12 and 14 years old), minors are legally allowed to test for STDs in all 50 states in the U.S. For more information, please click here.
THE TESTING PROCESS
A. We have hundreds of convenient testing locations. You can select a testing center to get tested at.
A. Our chlamydia and gonorrhea tests require a urine sample. HIV, oral herpes, genital herpes, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis tests require a blood sample.
A. If you are at risk for one STD, you are at risk for all STDs. We have two test packages to choose from:
- Comprehensive Panel: checks for chlamydia, gonorrhea, oral herpes, genital herpes, hepatitis B & C, and syphilis. HIV testing is not included.
- Comprehensive Panel with HIV 1 & 2: checks for chlamydia, gonorrhea, oral herpes, genital herpes, hepatitis B & C, syphilis, and HIV 1 & 2 – 4th Generation.
A. All of the tests on our Comprehensive Panels are performed using only a small blood and urine sample. A physician examination is not necessary.
A. None of the tests we offer require fasting or any other preparation. Since our Comprehensive Panels include testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia, do not urinate for at least 60 minutes prior to visiting the test center.
YOUR TEST RESULTS
A. Most results are available within 3 days after you visit the testing center.
A. Yes, your results are accessible on your smartphone. The results can be accessed via our portal.
A Not necessarily. Some STDs can remain dormant and show no symptoms for years. If you are in a monogamous relationship, have not cheated on your partner, and recently tested positive for an STD, it could be due to an STD you have had for a long time without knowing. It is possible that your partner did not cheat on you.
A. STDs are relatively easy to treat in both their bacterial and parasitic forms, but treatment takes time in clearing out the infection from your body. When you have a treatable STD, it is recommended that you refrain from sex until you (and if applicable, your partner) have completed treatment. If treatment is not completed and the infection does not entirely leave your body, the STD can return.
Q. After your STD test, we recommend that you re-test three months after your initial test to make sure that the STD is completely out of your system. If you are sexually active, annual tests are recommended (even if you are monogamous) to ensure that any dormant infections haven’t become active and have symptoms that are imitating other illnesses.
A. No. We do not accept health insurance.
A. The charge on your credit card statement should appear as ‘LabX, LLC’.
A. You may cancel your order any time before your visit to the test center. Refunds will be issued within 24-48 hours of cancellation.
Don’t Wait for Symptoms – Get Tested Now
You should get an STD test even if you are not showing any symptoms. Many avoid getting tested because they are not exhibiting any symptoms or because their symptom overlap with/are mistaken for other existing illnesses. This can lead to spreading the STD, and if left untreated, can result in severe health risks or even death. A untreated STD can never just go away on their own – only with proper treatment. If you are unsure as to whether your symptoms are the result of an STD, please visit Symptoms for more information.
Why You Should Get Tested
Sexually transmitted diseases are one of the most overwhelming yet under-recognized health problems in the United States. Even though it is recommended to get tested every three months when you’re sexually active, the stigma surrounding STD testing makes it a sensitive subject instead of a common check-up.
Per the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur every year and approximately 25% of Americans have some form of an incurable STD. To make matters worse, most STDs won’t display symptoms at first or will even display symptoms that can be mistaken for another illness, such as a yeast infection or the flu. Instead, those that are infected will remain completely unaware of their status, leading to them spreading the infection to others and not getting treatment until it is too late.
It’s no wonder that for Herpes alone, 85% of people who are infected don’t even know they have it. Chlamydia, one of the most common and curable STDs, will often not display symptoms until it is too late. As a result, 1 in 5 infected women will develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), resulting in reproductive issues and even infertility. Despite being the deadliest STD of all, 1 in 7 people who are infected with HIV do not realize that they are infected – their initial symptoms are usually shrugged off as the flu. Only until it is too late, when HIV turns into AIDS, do they realize that they are infected.
Long story short, not getting tested for STDs can be extremely dangerous as some STDs can have some life-threatening symptoms if they go untreated. STDs are usually stereotyped as a big joke – a mere annoyance, like an itch or burning sensation that just won’t go away. The truth is that untreated STDs can ruin more than just your physical health – it can ruin all of your life’s plans. Everything in your life can become tainted by an STD – having children, your relationships, even your life expectancy. The best cure is prevention, and the best way to prevent STDs is to get regularly checked.
